Bands & Choirs

The language of music is universal. It brings out the best in people and is a vital element in the education of every young person. Villanova offers a number of different training and performance opportunities in both vocal and instrumental music.

As part of our regular curriculum, students can earn credits in instrumental music.

A number of extra-curricular opportunities are also available in bands, choirs and through the Theatre Arts Program.

Intermediate and Senior Jazz Bands

The Intermediate Jazz Band is a Middle School ensemble for keen musicians in grades 6 through 8. Comprised of traditional band instruments as well as a rhythm section (drum kit, piano, bass and electric guitar), this group enjoys playing a variety of repertoire in the jazz, blues, and swing styles. They rehearse all year toward playing at the Christmas and Spring concerts with other VC performance groups.

The Senior Jazz Band ensemble is made up of students from grades 9 to 12. This year's group is "Super-Sized" with a total of 24 members, 7 more than a standard sized jazz band. The Sr. Jazz Band plays several styles of music including Swing, Funk, Salsa and Rock. Performance opportunities will include Christmas and Spring Concerts and a year-end festival.

Senior Concert Band

The Senior Concert Band is made up of students from grades 9-12. This group of dedicated musicians meets every Wednesday night for a 2 hour rehearsal. We perform several times every year including: Villanova's Christmas and Spring concerts, a Christmas concert at Marylake Shrine, community events, and music festivals. The highlight of the year is our annual March Break trip. In March 2014, we had a very successful trip to New York City where we toured and performed at many of the famous city's attractions.

Senior Choir

The Senior Choir is an Upper School vocal ensemble for mixed voices, rehearsing after school once a week throughout the year. The ensemble keeps a busy schedule, performing at the Christmas and Spring concerts, prayer services, school masses, festivals, and special events. Last year, they also sang carols at Hillcrest Mall, performed for the residents at Richview Manor, and sang the anthems at the ACC for a Toronto Raptors Game. The singers are looking forward to the same opportunities this school year.

Intermediate and Senior Drumline

The Middle School Drumliine is made up of students from grades 4 to 8. The following equipment is used: snare drums, tenor drums and bass drums, as well as orchestral percussion instruments including bells, xylophone, chimes, vibraphone and timpani. Members are introduced to techniques and rhythms that they can apply to their classroom instruments. The MS Drumline performs at Christmas and Spring Concerts.

The Senior Drumline ensemble is made up of students from grades 9 to 12. The following equipment is used: snare drums, tenor drums and bass drums, as well as orchestral percussion instruments including, bells, xylophone, chimes, vibraphone and timpani. Techniques, rudiments and complex rhythms are taught through a variety of grooves and styles. The Sr. Drumline performs at Homecoming, Community Events, Christmas and Spring Concerts.

VC Voices

VC Voices is Villanova's Middle School Girls Choir comprised of ladies from grades 4 through 8. We rehearse once a week as an ensemble and once every other week with the Villanova Boys Choir. The choir is a community of singers of all abilities and interests who come together in Unitas to learn vocal technique and expression. This is accomplished through learning choral repertoire in a variety of languages and genres. This year we have plans to perform in the Remembrance Day assembly, go carolling at a local seniors home, sing the national anthem at a Raptors game and attend the Ontario Vocal Festival.

Boys Choir

The Boys Choir is an all-male middle school ensemble comprised of students from grades 4-8. It is our goal to create a supportive, fun and welcoming space for guys to explore their voices through the rehearsal and performance of a variety of musical genres. This year our Boys Choir will be performing in the Remembrance Day assembly, caroling at a local seniors home, singing the national anthem at a Raptors game and attending the York Region Music Alive Vocal Festival.
